Doctor in training: Yungdrun Magli Budha

"I want to return to Dolpo as a doctor and prevent many women from dying during childbirth."

Yungdrun Magli Budha grew up in the Tibetan part of Dolpo. After the tragic death of her sister, the young Nepalese woman felt the desire early on to become a doctor in her home region of Dolpo in order to spare other women this fate and to contribute to better healthcare for the medically poor population. However, because she and her family could not afford an expensive medical degree, Yungdrun decided to complete a three-year training course to become a nurse, which she successfully completed.

Yungdrun returned to her home village of Ringmo in 2011 and founded a health post there on her own initiative, supported by the Dolpo Tulku Charity Foundation. At their request, our medical advisor Dr. Hans Marty worked with Yungdrun in Dolpo, both at the health post and at outpatient consultations in the surrounding villages.
Yungdrun kept repeating her desire to become a doctor because she increasingly realized that as a nurse she could only insufficiently meet the needs of the population.

After many discussions, Dr. Hans Marty came to the conclusion that Yungdrun was suitable and highly motivated to study medicine. On Dr. Marty's recommendation, the Dolpo Tulku Charity Foundation decided to support Yungdrun in her education.

With the help of the Dolpo Tulku Charity Foundation, Yungdrun studied at a university in Kathmandu from 2014 to 2016 and successfully completed his studies in 2016.

Yungdrun started his undergraduate studies (MBBS or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) at the Gandaki Medical College in Pokhara in 2016.

The cost of obtaining the MBBS is around CHF 40,000. This training is financed by the Dolpo Tulku Charity Foundation and the living costs during this basic course are financed by the Kalasha Foundation.

After completing the basic studies, a clinical year follows and then three years to obtain the title MDGP (Doctor of General and Emergency Medicine).

DolpoCare finances the remaining training to obtain the MDGP title, together with other foundations and associations:

3 years of study at CHF 12,000 per year -> total approx. CHF 36,000

Costs to be borne by DolpoCare until the MDGP is obtained: CHF 36,000.

Additional living costs for 4 years (study plus clinic year) borne by the Kalasha Foundation: CHF 6'000.
